Warner gears up for French comedy redux

'Freddy' scribes will pen caveman laffer

Warner Bros. has acquired the remake rights to Alain Chabat's French comedy "RRRrrrr!!!" and has hired Emmy-winning writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger to adapt the script.

The caveman comedy about the first murder committed by man and its first investigation was released in France last January.

Chabat wrote, directed and produced the pic for StudioCanal. Remake will be produced by Chabat with his partners Alex Berger, Stephanie Danan and Amandine Billot through Chabat's U.S. production company, Wamerica Prods.

Warner Bros. Pictures VP of production Jeff Clifford and creative executive Geoff Shaevitz are overseeing the project.

Chabat directed "Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatre," which grossed more than $120 million at the French box office, and is the French voice of the title character in "Shrek."

Aibel and Berger are completing an untitled comedy for Chabat at Disney. They also wrote "Freddy vs. Jason" for New Line and "Surviving Christmas" for DreamWorks.
