Costner, Ryan project out to directors; producers eye fall start

Stone Village's Scott Steindorff will produce the film with Costner, and they are mobilizing financing for a late-fall start in Malibu.
Steindorff and Costner are already producing "Modoc: The True Story of the Greatest Elephant That Ever Lived," which Costner intends to helm as well as topline.
They are out to directors on "Tortilla," the story of two families, one wealthy and experiencing suburban angst, the other illegal immigrants from Mexico trying to make a new life for themselves. The two clans cross paths in a hit-and-run accident. Pic will cost $20 million; no studio is yet attached.
Costner will take the job after completing work on an untitled Warner Bros. comedy scripted and being directed by "Ocean's Eleven" scribe Ted Griffin. In that pic, which continues the storyline of "The Graduate," Costner plays a character reputed to have been the inspiration for the Benjamin character played by Dustin Hoffman in the original film.
Steindorff has been working for several years to adapt the book by Boyle, who wrote "The Road to Wellville," made into a 1994 pic. Steindorff most recently produced "The Human Stain" and the upcoming HBO pic "Empire Falls." He just purchased screen rights to the Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel "Love in the Time of Cholera."
