Based on a true story and scripted by T.J. Mancini and Robert McCrea, pic concerns a mobster who refuses to play the rat and instead defends himself in court.
Project was among those that Yari shopped for foreign financing at the Cannes Film Festival (Daily Variety, May 12). Diesel's reps made his deal on Monday.
The film is a lower-budget undertaking than the likes of "Chronicles of Riddick," "XXX" and "The Fast and the Furious," all big-budget films that Diesel has recently toplined.
Diesel wanted to shoot a film with Lumet in Gotham, where the thesp began his career. There he served as a bouncer in clubs while waiting for his big break; eventually he got financing for his short film directing debut "Multi-Facial" and feature helming/acting debut "Strays."
Diesel just wrapped "The Pacifier" for Disney/Spyglass, with Adam Shankman directing.
