Shohreh Aghdashloo ("House of Sand and Fog") is attached to star, and it will be adapted by Aleksandra Crapanzano.
Book, published by Random House, is the true story of Nafisi, who resigned from her job as a lit professor in Tehran and invited seven of her best female students to attend a weekly class of Western literature in her home.
At the clandestine meetings, the women often shared photocopied pages of the illegal novels. They discussed books by Vladimir Nabokov, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Jane Austen, which served as a springboard for debates on the social, cultural and political realities they faced living under the repressive regime of the Ayatollah Khomeini.
Industry's Rosalie Swedlin and Nick Wechsler will produce the pic, which has yet to be presented to Warner Bros. under Industry's first-look deal at the studio.
"In a fundamentalist Islamic country where conversations about banned books are incendiary acts Azar's risks in holding her book group make for the kind of humanistic drama that we both find incredibly compelling as movie material," Swedlin said.
Swedlin has previously produced pics including HBO's "Live From Baghdad" as well as "Clockers" and "Red Corner."
Wechsler is currently producing the WB pic "Class Action," directed by Nikki Caro and starring Charlize Theron. His other credits include "Quills," "Requiem for a Dream" and the recently completed "Fierce People," starring Diane Lane.
