Film Roman will tie 'Ty' game to toon
'Tasmanian Tiger' vidgame coming to TV, DVD
Deal is the first Film Roman has made to license a vidgame property.
First game was released in 2002 by publisher Electronic Arts and has sold 1.3 million units worldwide. A sequel is set for release this fall. Game follows a member of the extinct Tasmanian Tiger species as he fights enemies with boomerangs in a battle to rescue his family.
"Ty the Tasmanian Tiger" appeals to an audience younger than average among gamers, and Film Roman execs cited that fact as a key reason they think it will work as a cartoon series.
"From a family entertainment standpoint, this is the perfect property," said DPS Film Roman chief operating officer Scott Greenberg.
Studio plans to create a 3-D animated DVD that it will both sell directly and use as a pilot to interest domestic and international syndicators in an animated series.
Film Roman parent company IDT Entertainment will work with Krome on merchandising opportunities.
Game developer had an animated series in mind from the moment it created the game and, according to CEO Robert Walsh, worked with writers to create story synopses and character backgrounds to help sell it for TV.
Krome Studios is already making plans for a third "Ty the Tasmanian Tiger" game, which it hopes to sked for release along with the DVD.
