'Whisky' gets shot in U.S.
Cannes prize winner secures bow
Second feature from co-directors Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll after their festival hit "25 Watts," "Whisky" won both the Regard Original jury prize and the Fipresci international critics award when it premiered at Cannes in Un Certain Regard.
Described as a South American excursion into droll Aki Kaurismaki-style comic territory, the film concerns Jacobo, the owner of a Montevideo sock factory, and his employee Marta, whose uncommunicative relationship is radically altered when the former's estranged brother returns after a long absence, prompting them to pose as a married couple.
A U.S.-based charitable foundation that aims to promote cross-cultural understanding through cinema, Global Film Initiative was an associate producer on "Whisky" and contributed a $10,000 grant toward post-production.
Following the MoMA premiere, the film will be part of GFI's 14-city Global Lens program, unspooling January through March. In addition, extended theatrical runs will be booked in key cities via a previously announced joint distribution deal with First Run Features, with a video/DVD release from the two companies to follow.
