Hamburg fries cutbacks

Ministry attempts to quell industry grumbling

COLOGNE -- In the wake of strong criticism from the film and TV industry, the city of Hamburg has elected not to cut public funding to film production.

Hamburg's arts ministry announced last month it planned to halve the E7 million ($8.4 million) it spent each year to support film production through funding body Filmfoerderung Hamburg. The news caused waves in the industry, and helmer Wim Wenders and pubcaster ZDF threatened to move their businesses out of the city.

"We've always considered the film activities an invaluable marketing tool for Hamburg, and a promotion for smaller businesses serving the film industry," said the ministry's spokesman, Christian Saadhoff. "We will try to come close to the original amount, assisted by other parties contributing a share."
