Porn pic 'Torremolinos' snagged

First Run takes rights to Berger's debut feature

MADRID -- Gotham-based niche distributor First Run Features has acquired all North American rights to Spanish director Pablo Berger's wry comedy on Spain's porn industry under Franco, "Torremolinos 73."

A hit in Spain, where it grossed E1.8 million ($2.2 million), Berger's debut feature turns on a downtrodden encyclopedia salesman, forced by the threat of a pinkslip into making Super 8 adult fare with his wife and himself as the stars. He dreams of becoming the next Ingmar Bergman, his wife of having a baby, even as she becomes an international sex symbol.

Javier Camara ("Talk to Her," "Bad Education") plays the husband and Candela Pena ("All About My Mother") his wife.

"Torremolinos 73" was produced by Telespan 2000; Estudios Picasso, the film and TV production arm of broadcaster Telecinco; and Danish Dogma producer Nimbus Films. This year it won the New Visions Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival and the actress nod (Pena) at the Miami Film Festival.

The U.S./Canada deal follows several territorial sales at the Cannes Film Festival.

International sales rights on "Torremolinos 73" are handled by Sogepaq, the distribution arm of Spain's Sogecable group.
