The Berlin Film Festival and the German government have set up the World Cinema Fund to support filmmakers from emerging countries.

Fund will be financed by federal arts foundation Kulturstiftung des Bundes, which has put aside E1.5 million ($1.8 million) for the next three years. The support is to benefit pics from countries with little developed film industries or shaken by political and economic crises.

"The fund will also enable films to find distribution, which otherwise (vanishes) after a niche screening at festivals," a Kulturstiftung spokeswoman said.

The funds are accessible by offshore filmmakers and local producers participating in foreign productions. Coin will be managed by the Berlin fest, which will provide screening slots for all titles chosen for support.
