Pic is based on the true story of Joseph Salvati, who was wrongly sentenced to life in prison for a 1965 murder that was commited by an FBI informer.
After a 20-year legal battle and 30 years in jail, Salvati proved his innocence and unwittingly uncovered a conspiracy between the FBI and the Mafia, dating back to FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover's era.
Parkes was struck by the relationship between Salvati and his lawyer, Victor Garo.
"What really got us was... the intensity of the friendship between the two men and the passion that Victor had in terms of this case," Parkes said. "And suddenly it wasn't just a court case, but it was really a story of extraordinary friendship."
Freirich has spent most of his career as a songwriter. His first script, "Winged Creatures," brought him to the attention of DreamWorks. That film is being packaged for Bob Salerno to produce.
