McDormand enlists for Par's 'Flux'

Kusama-helmed pic eyes 2005 release

Frances McDormand will co-star with Charlize Theron in Paramount Pictures' bigscreen live-action adaptation of the futuristic MTV toon series "Aeon Flux."

McDormand will portray the Handler in the pic, produced by MTV Films along with Valhalla Prods. in association with Lakeshore Entertainment. Lensing is slated to begin in August in Berlin for a 2005 release.

"Aeon Flux" will be directed by Karyn Kusama ("Girlfight"); producers are Valhalla topper Gale Anne Hurd, MTV Films prexy David Gale and Greg Goodman.

Script, penned by Phil Hay ("Crazy/Beautiful") and Matt Manfredi ("The Tuxedo"), is set 1,000 years in the future, when disease has wiped out the population save for one city. The acrobatic title character is the top operative in an underground rebellion, but when sent on a mission to kill the government's leader, she uncovers a secret making her question if she's on the right side.

Theron signed on to topline "Aeon Flux" just before winning the actress Oscar for "Monster" earlier this year. McDormand, who won an actress Oscar for "Fargo," will portray the leader of the rebellion.

McDormand most recently appeared in "Something's Gotta Give."

The original "Aeon Flux" series was created by Peter Cheung.
