Toronto Film Festival execs are mothballing the Perspective Canada program because it has outgrown its 20-year mandate to support the fledgling local film industry.

Instead, established Canuck filmmakers will show their work in other fest programs. "They will be positioned where they will be most effective, rubbing shoulders with their international counterparts," said fest topper Piers Handling.

Toronto will continue to promote new filmmakers with two new programs: Canada First! will present eight to 15 feature debuts per year, and Short Cuts Canada will unspool 30-40 shorts per year.
