Reino del Cielo's first move has been to take 15% on Ridley Scott's Crusades epic "Kingdom of Heaven." Line producer is Jose Luis Escolar.
The new KanZaman company takes its name from the Spanish version of Scott's title.
Reino del Cielo also will back Spanish pics, a requisite under country's co-prod regs to achieve Spanish nationality on its big international movies.
Reino del Cielo is a 100% subsid of KanZaman.
The creation of Reino del Cielo marks another step in the rapid growth of the 10-year-old Madrid-based KanZaman, which is owned by Denise O'Dell, Mark Albela and lawyer Luis Navarro.
After starting out as a provider of production services, KanZaman moved into production, often ensuring that international pics are shot in Spain. It teamed with Jeremy Thomas' Recorded Picture Co. on "Sexy Beast," co-produced the Spain-shot "The Reckoning," is a producer on Mary McGuckian's "The Bridge of San Luis Rey," has equity in "A Good Woman" and is co-producing "Sahara."
It also produced Spaniard Martin Garrido Baron's "H6: Diary of a Serial Killer," about a fame-craving psycho killer, which it will be moving for international sales at Cannes.
In February, KanZaman inked with Columbia TriStar Films Spain for the U.S. studio sub-branch to handle theatrical and DVD/VHS distribution for Spain on five KanZaman productions.
