Besson's 'Bandidas' lands at Fox

Hayek, Cruz in talks for roles as bank robbers

Twentieth Century Fox will handle the domestic release of "Bandidas," from producer Luc Besson.

Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz are in negotiations to star in the pic, budgeted at $30 million. It's being sold at Cannes by Besson's EuropaCorp.

Besson and Robert Mark Kamen penned the screenplay and have set directors Espen Sandberg and Joachim Roenning for the pic.

Pic, expected to start shooting in September in France and Mexico, is a comedy-Western that centers on two feisty bank robbers.

Hayek and Cruz first were offered roles in the pic last year.

Besson and Quentin Tarantino, prexy of the jury at this year's festival, were among participants in Tuesday's antipiracy seminar in Cannes, organized by France's funding org, the Centre National du Cinematographie, and the Assn. for the Fight Against Audiovisual Piracy.
