Allen holds water for Fox

Quaintance adapting screenplay from Hoffman novel

Elizabeth Allen will direct "Aquamarine," a comedy for Fox 2000.

John Quaintance is adapting the screenplay from the Alice Hoffman novel about two teenage girls who discover a 17-year-old mermaid in their beach club's swimming pool.

Director of development Rodney Ferrell and creative exec Erin Lindsay oversee the project at the studio.

At Fox Searchlight, Allen is also attached to direct "Driving While Infatuated," a script she wrote with Kyle Long.

Allen also adapted Jerry Spinelli's teen novel "Stargirl" for Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. With her Film Generator producing partner, Kelly Macmanus, Allen is developing teen musical comedy "Operation Promdress" with the Walt Disney Co.

Allen began her career with the short film "Eyeball Eddie," which premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival. Allen attended the USC School of Cinema and Television's MFA program, where she received the Jack Nicholson directing scholarship.
