Story is about a cynical woman with a longtime boyfriend, whose commitment to being single is sorely tested by the 17 weddings they must attend over six months.
Evans will produce with Tatijana Shoan and Elizabeth Costa.
Evans is negotiating to make "Wedding Season" his first Paramount Pictures project since reupping his first-look deal at the studio. It is the first major project for his Robert Evans Prods. since the Comedy Central animated series "Kid Notorious" and the Par comedy pic "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days."
Evans said Cosper's novel has a romantic comedy premise like "How to Lose a Guy," but has the cynicism and edge of the cartoon series that was based on his own exploits.
"This might be the most unromantic romantic comedy of the year," he said. "I liked it because it reflects an evolution in values. I can remember when guys wanted to get married early. Women thought something was wrong if they hadn't gotten married early. Now they want their own identity, which isn't defined by a wedding ring."
Evans, who's been to the altar a few times himself, also liked the idea of a romantic comedy that doesn't automatically make marriage the definition of its happy ending.
Published by Random House, "Wedding Season" is gaining momentum. Since bowing in late March, book has gone into its seventh printing, Evans said, with 100,000 copies now in circulation. He said the studio was keen on getting a script to start as early as fall.
