Production is expected to begin this fall on locations in Eastern Europe.
Written by Burns, "PU239" is set in post-Glasnost Russia. After a nuclear facility technician has an accident, he travels to Moscow in search of work and finds himself involved with the city's low-level mobsters. The film's title refers to the atomic number for plutonium.
This will be the first time that the Warner Bros. Pictures-based Section 8 has produced a pic for UA.
Burns originally set up "PU239" at Working Title in 2001, with Peter Berg attached to direct. When Working Title put it in turnaround, Section 8 optioned the script and set it up at UA after Warners passed on the project. With Berg occupied by "Friday Night Lights" at Universal, he agreed to become a producer on "PU239."
Also producing "PU239" are Soderbergh and George Clooney, with Section 8 presidents Jennifer Fox and Ben Cosgrove as executive producers.
Supervising production for UA are executive VP Daniel Rosett and Sara Rose, senior VP production and acquisitions.
