The studio has hired Jerry Stahl to script a remake of the Burt Reynolds film, which WB released in 1981.
Stahl, who wrote the heroin memoir "Permanent Midnight," will give the crime drama a contemporary twist. Reynolds directed the original and starred as a vice squad cop who assembles a team and goes after a group of brutal bad guys. Pic was based on a novel by William Diehl.
"Sharky's" becomes the second Reynolds starrer getting a major studio redo; Adam Sandler is toplining a remake of "The Longest Yard" for Paramount.
Iwanyk set up the "Sharky's" remake under his Thunder Road banner, unfurled last year after the former WB veepee returned to the fold. Iwanyk left the studio after five years to become head of production at Intermedia. In three years there, he developed films including "Terminator 3," "K-19: The Widowmaker," "Adaptation" and "Alexander the Great."
