Gauls watching more TV

Viewers' dissatisfaction increases

PARIS -- An annual report published by research org Mediametrie found that French people watched more TV than ever in 2003. The average household watched television for 3 hours 22 minutes per day, up two minutes on the previous year.

Women were the most avid viewers, watching 3 hours 43 minutes, while men tuned in for 3 hours 19 minutes per day. Children aged 4-10 watched an average of 2 hours 11 minutes per day.

Meanwhile, some 60% of French people are dissatisfied with what's on the tube, according to a study by Ipsos Medias published by Gallic weekly mag Strategies.

Pubcaster France 3 achieved the highest percentage of satisfied viewers (76%), followed by the Franco-German culture channel Arte (65%) and principal pubcaster France 2 (62%).

Only 49% said they were satisfied with leading commercial broadcaster TF1, while the Canal Plus premium channel came off even worse, with just 36% of those surveyed saying their were satisfied with the paybox.

However, when asked about different categories of shows, TF1 was ranked top for news, entertainment, reality and gameshows as well as series.
