MGM has applied a half-nelson to "Unleashing the Mules," pinning down a spec script deal for an uplifting drama based on blind grappler Deke Edwards, who became a two-time state wrestling champ in Missouri despite his disability. Deal was in the mid-six figures.
Christopher Parker wrote the script, and Alex Gartner will produce.
The film revolves around the relationship between the athlete and his coach, who helped the youngster wrestle with adversity when he lost his sight at the age of 13. Despite the hardship, Edwards became the scourge of the 112-pound division, finishing with a record of 57 wins and only two losses in high school.
Pic caught the fancy of Gartner, the former MGM production prexy who segued to a producing deal.
MGM execs Pete Chiarelli and Eric Paquette will oversee development.
