CBS gets up in Sun. ayem

Eye edges ahead of Alphabet

CBS News continues to cast a happy eye on its growth in the ayem hours, both during the week and on the weekend.

On March 7, "Face the Nation With Bob Schieffer" remained the No. 2 Sunday morning show, with ABC News' "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" squarely at No. 3. Until recently, the shows had been running neck-and-neck.

According to Nielsen Media Research, "Face" averaged 3 million viewers and drew a 1.1 rating in adults 25-54, the key news demo. "This Week" averaged 2.6 million viewers and posted a 0.6 rating.

NBC News' "Meet the Press," the leader, averaged a healthy 5 million viewers and a 1.3 demo rating on March 7. Fox Television's "News Sunday," the No. 4 Sunday morning show, averaged 1.5 million viewers and drew a 0.4 demo rating.

ABC News noted that "This Week" was the only Sunday ayem show to be up in total viewers compared with the same frame last year; CBS pointed out that "Face the Nation" was gaining ground on "Meet" in the adult 25-54 demo.

For the week of March 8, CBS News' "The Early Show" was the only weekday morning program to post growth in total viewers (3 million) and key demos compared with the same week last year, according to Nielsen. That's after "Early" delivered its best February sweep in almost a decade.

Competish points out that "Early" remains well behind NBC News' "Today Show" and ABC News' "Good Morning America" and that any growth appears strong since the show is coming from so far behind.

For the week of March 8, "Today" averaged a healthy 6.4 million viewers and "GMA" 5.2 million. In adults 25-54, "Today" drew a 2.6 rating, "GMA" a 1.8 and "Early" a 1.1.
