New Yorker tops Ellies

Stewart's mag nommed for general excellence

Convicted media diva Martha Stewart could be lining her jail cell with statuettes -- her mag was nominated Wednesday for a National Magazine Award.

For the seventh straight year, the New Yorker took the most noms, with 11 in nine categories. Conde Nast sibling, Vanity Fair, was unexpectedly slighted, emerging empty-handed for the first time in recent memory. Martha Stewart Living is competing against National Geographic, Newsweek, Time and Oprah's O in the general excellence category for magazines with a circulation of over 2 million. It's the first time that "Martha Stewart Living" has been nominated for general excellence.

Mag awards -- known as the Ellies for the Alexander Calder-designed elephantine sculpture winners receive -- will be presented May 5 in Gotham.

Among the 110 finalists, Esquire came in second to the New Yorker with seven noms, while the Atlantic Monthly received six noms and National Geographic four.
