Tom Kennedy

NABET union leader

NABET union leader Thomas F. Kennedy died March 3 in Burbank, Calif., of cancer. He was 73.

Kennedy was a longtime engineer at NBC and a member of the National Assn. of Broadcast Employees and Technicians Local 53 in Burbank since 1964.

A native of New York, Kennedy worked at Lockheed and Litton Industries before joining NBC, from which he retired in 1989.

He served as Region 5 VP and network coordinator for NABET; during a bitter strike in 1987, he testified at a hearing of the House Telecommunications and Finance subcommittee, where he called for licensing of the networks. He also discussed NABET's strike against NBC in an appearance on Phil Donahue's talkshow.

He is survived by his wife Katherine; a son Thomas, an IATSE member; and two grandchildren.

Donations may be sent to NABET-CWA Sector Office, 501 Third St.N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001 for a scholarship fund in his name.
