WASHINGTON -- The Motion Picture Assn. has nabbed one of the Justice Dept.'s top legal eagles to head its international anti-piracy campaign.

John Malcolm will officially become the trade org's senior VP and director of worldwide piracy April 5.

Malcolm honed his international crime-fighting skills as the deputy assistant attorney general for Justice's criminal division, where he headed the computer crime and intellectual property section. Before that, Malcolm was a partner at Malcolm & Schroeder and had previously worked at Justice as the assistant U.S. attorney in the northern district of Georgia.

"Digital piracy is a growing threat to our industry," MPA topper Jack Valenti said in a statement. "And there is none more qualified to lead our worldwide anti-piracy operations than John Malcolm."

Malcolm succeeds Ken Jacobsen, who is retiring after nine years at the MPA.
