"Mythica" is no more.
Microsoft has decided to cancel its long-in-development massively multiplayer online role-playing game "Mythica," which was scheduled to come out later this year.
In a statement on the Mythica Web site, Microsoft Games Studios manager Adam Waalkes said cancellation of the Norse mythology-inspired title was prompted by increasing competition in the crowded MMORPG space.
Few MMORPG titles have found success since Sony's "Everquest" launched and quickly dominated the market in 1999. However, many are still hoping to enter the lucrative space, which generates monthly subscription fees on top of an initial purchase price. Others set to launch in 2004 include an "Everquest" sequel and VU Games' highly anticipated "World of Warcraft."
Up to 40 Microsoft Games Studios employees may lose their jobs as a result of the cancellation.
