Half-hour of 'Idol' enough for Fox

Fox has won another Wednesday in key ratings categories with "American Idol," as the first half-hour results edition crushed its competish at 8:30, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen.

"American Idol" (10.4/27 in adults 18-49, 24.3 million viewers overall) was again up over the same night a year ago, combining with "That '70s Show" (5.7/16 in adults 18-49, 12.4 million viewers) for a potent opening hour for Fox. Net's 9 o'clock drama "The OC" (5.0/12 in adults 18-49, 11.5 million viewers overall) was a solid second in 18-49 and won the hour comfortably in younger demos.

ABC ran second in 18-49 behind "The Bachelorette" (5.2/12 in adults 18-49, 11.4 million viewers), which led the 9 o'clock hour in 18-49, jumping sharply over its lead-in. Net also placed second in 18-49 at 8 with "My Wife and Kids" (3.6/10, 10.1 million viewers overall) and at 10 with "Celebrity Mole: Yucatan" (4.3/11, 8.7 million viewers). As has been the case four of the six weeks its aired, "Mole" won its hour in adults 18-34 (4.6/13).

"King of Queens" was again the Wednesday highlight for CBS, as two original episodes from 9 to 10 averaged a solid 4.3/10 in adults 18-49 and a first-place 12.3 million viewers overall.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 6.6/17; ABC, 4.1/11; NBC, 3.9/10; CBS, 3.5/9; WB, 1.9/5; UPN, 1.4/4.

In total viewers: Fox, 14.9 million; NBC, 12.0 million; CBS, 11.1 million; ABC, 9.5 million; WB, 4.4 million; UPN, 3.3 million.
