Rookie outfit Aquelarre sells int'l rights to doc
Aquelarre is a new Madrid-based production-distribution combo launched by veteran film exec Luis Angel Bellaba. Directed by Nahuel Garcia, Sheila Perez Jimenez and Ramiro Garcia, the documentary chronicles the lives of Buenos Aires "cartoneros," -- street scavengers who have multiplied in an Argentina reeling from recession.
Feature-length docu is co-produced by Bellaba and Carlos Rizzuti.
"Tren" is the first of an initial three-pic slate from Aquelarre, which meshes Spanish and Argentine finance, Argentine directorial talent and often favourable shooting conditions, given currency levels, in Argentina.
A second Aquelarre film, "Lifting de corazon" (Heartlift), directed by Argentine auteur Eliseo Subiela, is at the screenplay stage. Film sees Subiela returning to his familiar stamping ground of a lyrical but cerebral exploration of human sentiments, here love as a fleeting pathological ailment.
Co-produced by Seville's Jaleo Films ("Carlos contra el mundo") and Andalisian pubcaster Canal Sur, "Heartlift" is skedded to roll in June two weeks in Seville and six in Buenos Aires. Subiela will cast in March.
Aquelarre is also prepping "Un minuto de silencio," which is helmed by Roberto Maiocco and toplines Eduardo Blanco ("The Son of the Bride"), Alejandra Darin and Antonio Dechent.
All three pics are co-productions with Argentina.
