RIO DE JANEIRO -- Four Oscar nominations for Fernando Meirelles' "City of God" has prompted distribs to re-release the pic in Brazil and other countries, while the two Brazilian nets with rights to the kudocast are experiencing greater interest in ad spots.
"City of God" was nominated for director, adapted screenplay, cinematography and film editing awards.
Local distrib Lumiere will relaunch the pic Friday with 100 copies in Brazil's largest cities. That same day, "City of God" will also be relaunched in France (Mars Films), Spain (Vertigo) and South Africa (Videovision), while Miramax is cranking up the number of screens on which it appears in the U.S.
"City of God" grossed $20.5 million in 40 countries in 2002 and 2003. In its native Brazil, it opened on Aug. 30, 2002, and sold 3.3 million tickets during a 54-week run. The film has already been released on homevideo and DVD.
Execs for No. 2 net SBT, which has exclusive terrestrial TV rights to the Oscars in Brazil, and Turner's TNT, which has exclusive rights for pay TV, are celebrating the nominations with faster ad sales.
