Add the Multiband OFDM Alliance to the list of noncatchy-named groups promoting a technology standard to spur home networking.
Group recently agreed to formalize itself after Texas Instruments, a leading manufacturer of wireless semiconductors (and which has a more catchy name), joined.
Its technology, called ultra wideband, allows super-high rates of wireless data transmission using low power. That would allow data as complex as high-definition video to stream from set-top boxes or computers directly to televisions, cutting out the need for wires in transmitting video data between devices in the house.
Alliance hopes to publish its first standard by May.
(And in case you're curious: OFDM is a 40-year-old technology and stands for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing.)
