Architect Richard M. Olcott unveiled his model for the American National Theater on Monday. The press conference took place at the Odeon restaurant in Tribeca, a few blocks north of the proposed venue's site at the World Trade Center.
"How can you put a space of 210,000 square feet on that site?" asked Olcott. "In a most vertical city." The Polshek Partnership architect has designed what he calls a "vertical complex."
In Olcott's vision, ANT would stand at the corner of Greenwich and Fulton streets and share one wall with the Freedom Tower. The structure itself is a glass box in which three theaters float on alternate levels. Cost: about $200 million.
Together with the city and state, the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. is expected to announce next month five finalists for the cultural project at WTC.
If not accepted by the LMDC, the American National Theater project would look to another site in lower Manhattan, said the org's prexy, Sean Cullen.
