Strip registered Twentieth TV's best first-day showing since "Texas Justice" debuted in 2001. While national numbers won't be available for another two weeks, performance of "On Air" topped any of the November sweeps averages posted by the other rookie strips, except "Ellen."
Elsewhere in syndication for the week ending Jan. 4, an upswing in viewership corrected the sharp drop of the week before. The 4 million households that abandoned syndie programming during Christmas week returned to the fold, with numbers sharply higher in access and latenight time periods.
All of the newsmag and relationship shows saw increased ratings week-to-week.
"Entertainment Tonight" led the pack with a 16% spike to a 5.2, followed by "Inside Edition" (3.4, up 6%), "Access Hollywood" (2.8, up 12%), "Extra" (2.4, up 14%) and "Celebrity Justice" (1.2 up 9%).
On the dating scene, "Blind Date" led the category, with a 6% uptick to a 1.9. Double-digit gains also bussed "ElimiDate" (1.6), "Extreme Dating" (1.4, a series high) and "Fifth Wheel" (1.3).
In daytime, "Oprah" led the talkers, up 9% to a 6.3, while "Judge Judy" slid 2% to 4.7.
"Living It Up With Ali & Jack," which did so well last week, was deflated 15%, back to a 1.1. Meanwhile, fellow rookies "Ellen" (1.7), "Sharon Osbourne" (1.4) and "Starting Over" (1.0) saw gains despite being in repeats.
