Sony taking foreign on 'Producers'

Pic could continue 'Rundown' U, Sony dynamic

Sony Pictures Entertainment is in negotiations to handle foreign distribution on the Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane's feature film remake of Mel Brooks' "The Producers."

The hit Broadway tuner landed domestic distribbing via Universal Pictures on Monday (Daily Variety, Jan. 6), with U studio confirming that it was aiming for a late 2005 release, lensing early next year.

U and Sony have partnered on several recent pics, including last year's actioner "The Rundown" and on 2000 drama "Erin Brockovich." In both cases, U handled domestic and Sony took the foreign distribbing. Terms of the imminent "Producers" international distribbing deal were not disclosed.

Pic is being produced by Brooks, co-written by Brooks and Thomas Meehan, and will be directed by the Broadway show's helmer and choreographer, Susan Stroman.
