Burton studied at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg and appeared in several Broadway plays including "The Wedding Breakfast," "Sound of Hunting" and "Anna Christie."
He appeared in more than 40 feature films, including "The Towering Inferno," "Save the Tiger," "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Bloodsport."
On television, he guested on series including "I Dream of Jeannie," "The Rockford Files," "Murder, She Wrote" and "St. Elsewhere."
He retired first to Prescott, Ariz., and then to Ajijic, Mexico, where he was living at the time of his death.
He is survived by a daughter, a niece, a nephew and two grandsons.
