Les Tremayne

Radio actor

Les Tremayne, well known radio actor of the 1930s and '40s, died of heart failure Dec. 19 in Santa Monica. He was 90.

Tremayne, born in England, moved as a child to Chicago, where he won his first radio role on the show "Night Court" while still in high school. In the 1940s, he was cited as one of the three most famous voices in America, and he worked on more than 30,000 broadcasts.

Tremayne was a charter member of AFTRA and was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1995. Among the radio shows he starred in were "The First Nighter," where he dressed in top hat and tails before a live audience; "Betty and Bob"; "The Old Gold Show"; "The Thin Man"; and "The Falcon."

On television, he appeared in "One Man's Family," "Ellery Queen," "Shazam!" and "General Hospital." He worked on feature films as well, playing the auctioneer in Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" and also appeared in "The War of the Worlds." He also provided voices for several cartoon series, including "Mr. Magoo" and the 1986 "Jonny Quest."

He is survived by his wife Joan and a brother.
