ESPN Deportes anchors set

LaFountain, Murrieta, Palomo, Perez drafted onto team

MIAMI -- ESPN Deportes, which will launch as a 24-hour Spanish-lingo feevee in the United States on Jan. 7, has named anchors for its "SportsCenter" show.

ESPN has tapped former Telemundo sportscaster Michele LaFountain, who was a co-anchor for "SportsCenter International" from 1997-2000; Mexican Heriberto Murrieta, who was a longtime sportscaster for Televisa; Fernando Palomo, an anchor for ESPN Latin America's "SportsCenter"; and Jorge Eduardo Sanchez Perez, who joined ESPN Dos, the Mexican channel, as a commentator and announcer in 2000.

The four will present live 30-minute editions of "SportsCenter" at 11 p.m. ET and 2 a.m. ET, Monday through Saturday, with a one-hour live program on Sundays at 11 p.m. ET. Similar to ESPN, the 2 a.m. shows will be rebroadcast on ESPN Deportes the following morning.

The channel's Jan. 7 bow will include a live National Basketball Assn. telecast of the Golden State Warriors at the Dallas Mavericks at 9 p.m. ET.

Following the launch, ESPN Deportes plans to showcase more than 200 live events in its first year, featuring the NBA, Major League Baseball, the National Football League, UEFA Champions League, Wimbledon, the French Open and selected boxing events.

ESPN already operates a Spanish-lingo Web site, www.ESPNdeportes.com
