Dubbed "CTV East," the new signal will carry as much of CFTO-TV Toronto's programming as is available on HD and will "digitally up-convert" the rest.
"Up-converting" is a middle ground offering improvement in quality but falls short of programming lensed in HD.
Viewers need to have an HD-compatible TV and an HD tuner to receive the signal.
Chum Television's Citytv Toronto was the first local station to launch in HDTV, in fall 2002. In August, TSN and Discovery Channel, both majority owned by CTV parent company Bell GlobeMedia, were the first specialty channels to broadcast in HD.
