German funds get animated

Teutonic toon slated for coin

COLOGNE -- Animation studio Ludewig tooing up an animated pic featuring the kiddie book characters parodied in 2001 boffo pic "Manitou's Shoe."

Gerd Ludewig's "Winnetoon's -- Der Schatz im Silbersee" is the first animated version of Karl May's 19th century novels. The helmer has nabbed $650,000 from film funding body FilmFoerderung Hamburg for his project.

FF Hamburg also slated $767,000 for another cartoon pic, the sequel of 2002 success "The Little Polar Bear," which has already received $1.4 million from public funds. Drama "Der Liebeswunsch" (The Love Wish), featuring top actors Nicolette Krebitz, Heino Ferch and Tobias Moretti, has received $590,000; while some $200,000 was slated for Dutch-German co-production "Sportsmann des Jahrhunderts" (Sportsman of the Century) about the whims of a farmer's son ambitious to break the record of sitting on a pole.
