The Rock stole the show at Monday night's Universal Amphitheater preem of "The Rundown," an actioner in which he takes on his first-ever comedic role on the bigscreen.

Flanked by loyal WWE fans before and after the screening, the former lineman-turned-wrestler said preemgoers seemed more than pleased with his onscreen antics.

"I have always, always loved comedy, and the response tonight was really good," Dwayne Johnson, aka the Rock, said at the Amphitheater after-party. He made light of the film's use of physical humor, specifically a scene where a monkey humps his face -- "monkey love action Rock-style," as he put it.

The Rock performed all but two of his own stunts in "The Rundown." His cousin and stunt double wound up breaking his ankle on the set during one the scenes he chose not to do.

Producer Kevin Misher called "The Rundown" a "big summer movie" released in September and enthused about the film's elaborate fight scenes, choreographed by "The Scorpion King" stunt coordinator Andy Cheng.

Misher called the Rock's performance the "most important special effect."
