Anthony Gasbarri

Anthony Gasbarri, tailor whose crafted suits were prized by showbizzers, died of a heart attack Aug. 30 while working at his Vine Street shop. He was 77.

Clients included Charles "Buddy" Rogers (wife Mary Pickford thanked Gasbarri with a bottle of Dom Perignon, delivered by limousine), Red Skelton, Kirk Douglas, Merv Griffin, Lee Majors and Steve McQueen.

Pacentro, Italy, native became a tailor's apprentice at 8. After WWII, he began his special career by making suits for American diplomats. Those diplomats later helped him to emigrate to America in 1958.

He specialized in making suits out of a single piece of fabric, with no seam down the back, so that they were more sculpted than sewn.

He opened his business in Hollywood in 1961.
