Fox News shows improve from '02

'Van Susteren' up 47% from 2001; 'Smith,' 'O'Reilly' see gains

NEW YORK -- When it came to the dog days of August, Fox News Channel posted ratings gains across its lineup compared with the same month last year.

"On the Record With Greta Van Susteren" was the biggest winner, up 47% in total average viewers compared with August 2002.

"Hannity & Colmes" was up 26% compared with last year; the "Fox Report With Shepard Smith" rose 13%; and "The O'Reilly Factor" improved 9%.

MSNBC and CNN continued to take hits, particularly on their revamped lineups.

At MSNBC, "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" was down 39% compared with August 2002, when Phil Donahue's talkshow had the 8 p.m. ET timeslot.

CNN's "Live From the Headlines With Anderson Cooper" was down 23% in total average viewers compared with August 2002, when the political shouter "Crossfire" held the 7 p.m. ET timeslot.

"Live From the Headlines With Paula Zahn" was down 18% compared with August 2002, when "Connie Chung Tonight" had the 8 p.m. ET slot.

Comparing August strictly to July, CNN pointed out it was up in terms of total average viewers. In primetime, the news net was up 14% from the previous month.
