Pollack near 'Skate' date for Fox 2000

Schwartz has held options to the book since 1977

Sydney Pollack, meet Sydney Skate.

Oscar-winning helmer Sydney Pollack is in negotiations to helm "Shockproof Sydney Skate" at Fox 2000 Pictures.

Steve Kloves ("Harry Potter," "Wonder Boys") wrote the script based on the novel by Marijane Meaker. Kloves has already penned several drafts, some dating back to when Cameron Crowe was attached to the film in 2000.

Indeed, "Shockproof" is one of the longest gestating projects in Hollywood. Pic has been in development at Fox for several years, and its producer, Teri Schwartz, has held options to the book dating back to 1977; novel was was first published 30 years ago. Exec producer is Leslie Morgan.

"Shockproof" is a coming-of-age story about a young man who just before college falls in love with the same gorgeous model as his lesbian mother.

Fox 2000 exec veep Carla Hacken is shepherding the project along with division prexy Elizabeth Gabler.

If successful, talks would add a second pic to the multihyphenate Pollack's busy sked; he's already committed to helming U.N. assassination drama "The Interpreter," with Nicole Kidman toplining for Working Title/Universal Pictures, as his next film.

'Random' chance

Pollack has not directed a pic since the flopped 1999 Columbia romantic drama "Random Hearts," which starred Harrison Ford, Kristin Scott Thomas and Pollack. In recent years he has focused on producing and occassionally acting instead of helming. He was the exec producer of last year's "The Quiet American" and a producer of this year's "Cold Mountain," both Miramax Films releases.

Pollack, currently the host of movie show "The Essentials" on cabler Turner Classic Movies, is being repped by CAA.
