ROTTERDAM -- Sandra den Hamer, co-director of the Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam, has been appointed general director of the IFFR beginning March 1.

Den Hamer has been co-director with Simon Field for three years. Field announced earlier this year that he would step down to return to London to pursue other interests after next year's run. Den Hamer said she and Field will plan the 33rd fest, which will run Jan. 21-Feb. 1.

Following that, she told Daily Variety, she will focus on strengthening the visibility of the programming team. "The festival can't be a one-woman or a one-man show because it's important to represent the diversity of cinema and of the different artistic perspectives," she said.

Den Hamer added that the fest would continue to observe political developments and developments in cinema very closely and would continue with its focus on cross-platform and -genre art, which last year included Guy Maddin's "Cowards Bend the Knee," which used film in street installations.

Den Hamer worked for a short period at the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht, then started out at IFFR in 1986 as the coordinator of fest sidebar CineMart.

Hans van Beers, chairman of the IFFR festival board, said den Hamer has the "proven expertise, good management skills but also artistic skills and the boldness to innovate" that the position demands.
