Wrubel takes Initiative post

GFI promotes cross-cultural interaction through cinema

Former Madstone exec Susan Wrubel has joined the Global Film Initiative as head of acquisitions and programs.

Gotham-based org seeks to promote cross-cultural understanding through cinema.

In the newly created role, Wrubel will inherit the mantle held by Noah Cowan, who makes the switch from org's executive director to a member of its board of directors.

Passing baton

Cowan plans to hand off day-to-day duties to Wrubel, who will handle grants, international market representation and strategy for the org in addition to acquisitions and contract negotiations.

She was most recently VP of acquisitions at Madstone; before that she was VP of theatrical distribution and acquisitions at New Yorker Films. At the latter, she acquired pics including "La Ceremonie," "The Eel" and "The Wind Will Carry Us."

"It's an ideal time for me to focus on marketing strategy and ongoing program development as an Initiative board member," Cowan said.

In the last month, nonprofit org completed its acquisition slate, bringing total to nine. Thus far, it has issued grants to six films and announced a partnership with Gotham's Museum of Modern Art.
