Short rides 'Whale'

The 11-minute short, directed by Ouida Smit and Madoda Ncayiyana and produced by Julie Frederikse of Vuleka Prods., was made as part of pubcaster SABC1's Steps for the Future series of AIDS awareness projects and won the Djibril Diop Mambety Prize at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
With limited funding for features, many South African filmmakers make shorts. The problem has been to find a market for them outside of festivals.
