Mags moving to movie mode

Maxim, New Yorker film issues to hit newstands in October

Movie-themed magazines apparently sell well even when they're not pegged to the Oscars. A good several months after the usual display of glossy Oscar homage from the likes of Vanity Fair and People, mags like the New Yorker and Maxim are putting the focus on Hollywood.

In October the second edition of Maxim Goes to the Movies will be on newsstands, following a successful first run of the inaugural edition, which sold through its 400,000 distribution at a rate of over 60%, according to Dennis Publishing spokesman Drew Kerr.

The magazine was originally planned to appear only once.

Also in October, the New Yorker will publish a special movie-themed issue, the first under editor-in-chief David Remnick. (Former topper Tina Brown edited a "California" issue in 1998.) Conde Nast's literary mag typically publishes six specials a year, including a pair of fiction and fashion issues. Other subjects, such as money and politics, vary year to year.

Last spring New Yorker staffer Tad Friend relocated to Los Angeles, where he pens a regular "Letter From California."
