According to a Conde Nast spokesman, Galotti resigned Thursday morning because he had not been offered a higher management position since his return to S.I. Newhouse's publishing empire in February 2002.
"He's interested in running a multi-title division of magazines, and he's leaving the company to pursue that," the spokesman said.
Galotti will be replaced by Peter King Hunsinger, prexy of the Conde Nast Bridal Group.
The publisher previously exited in 1998, when he gave up Vogue to launch Talk magazine with former Vanity Fair and New Yorker editor Tina Brown, and in 1993, when he was fired from Vanity Fair at a time when the glossy's ad pages were falling.
After Talk shuttered in early 2002, the real-life Mr. Big (he was Candace Bushnell's inspiration for the character in "Sex and the City") was brought back in to the Conde Nast fold by prexy Steve Florio and offered the GQ job, a notch down from Vogue.
Conde Nast sources say he was indeed hoping for a more prestigious position but that his resignation was forced.
"It was not his choice. This is from Newhouse," said one source, referring to S.I. Newhouse Jr., chairman of Conde Nast's parent Advanced Publications.
Galotti was asked to leave on Wednesday over lunch. When he came to the office on Thursday to address his staff, his office had been cleared.
Galotti could not be reached for comment.
