Canal Plus, TF1 settle spat

Fee said to be less than original

PARIS -- Vivendi Universal's Gallic satcaster Canal Plus reportedly has settled a spat over charges for carrying private web TF1's info channel, LCI.

The 10 million euros ($11.8 million) annual contract expired at the end of 2001, and Canal Plus wanted to cut the carriage fee to somewhere near the $5.9 million paid by satcaster TPS, a TF1 corporate sibling. After numerous extensions of the contract, Canal threw down the gauntlet in September, threatening to pull the info channel if the issue wasn't resolved by June.

It is unknown exactly how much Canal Plus will pay for LCI under the new contract, but it is said to be substantially less than the original fee.
