MIAMI -- Jack Valenti reunited with an old political comrade when he inaugurated the U. of Miami's Latin American Film Series Friday during a screening of Juan Jose Jusid's "Apasionados" on campus.

University prexy Donna Shalala noted her relationship with the MPAA topper dates back to the Carter administration, when she was fresh on the D.C. scene. The official relationship between the university and the MPAA began last year with a weeklong Latin American screenwriters' workshop and continues with this series.

Valenti promised a number of U.S. preems among the pics -- and future dealings with his friend in academia.

"We want this to be an ongoing enterprise," he said.
