AFTRA nods to Cedric, Flack

Event unspools May 12

AFTRA has tapped Cedric the Entertainer and Roberta Flack to receive kudos at its inaugural AFTRA Media and Entertainment Excellence Awards for entertainment and recording artists, respectively.

AFTRA previously announced its George Heller Lifetime Achievement Award would go to "60 Minutes" creator Don Hewitt, and AMEEs in Broadcasting will go to the journalists of "60 Minutes." The event will take place May 12 at the Waldorf Astoria in Gotham.

"An entire evening could be spent highlighting just Don Hewitt's achievements, and surely we could spend hours singing the praises of Ed Bradley, Steve Kroft, Dan Rather, Andy Rooney, Morley Safer, Bob Simon, Lesley Stahl and Mike Wallace," AFTRA prexy John Connolly said. "As the union that represents entertainers and recording artists as well as broadcast journalists, we wanted to include these terrific artists as well."

Walter Cronkite is honorary chair with Martin E. Segal, founder of the Segal Co., while Mel Karmazin and Les Moonves are co-chairs. NPR's Bob Edwards, also first national VP of AFTRA, will emcee the evening.
