'Pupendo' piles up

World Brief

Helmer Jan Hrebejk's "Pupendo" is powering the Czech B.O., racking up more than 300,000 admissions since opening three weeks ago. Only the two "Lord of the Rings" movies have bettered those figures.

The film is already a critical success, earning the top prize at the Czech national film fest Finale just days after it opened.

U.S. films are having a sluggish month at the box office. Distributors and exhibitors are wondering if the war and anti-American sentiment has hurt attendance for U.S. films.

Although the year started well, admissions began falling off in February. The situation in neighboring Slovakia is similar.

"Chicago" and Brit Bond spoof "Johnny English," both films that portend strong box office, open later this month.
